Due to a recent move by the US government to ban all immigrants and visa holders from seven countries, including Iran, from entering the US for 90 days, Iran's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said the presence of the US wrestling team in the 2017 Wrestling World Cup is subject to the statement by Foreign Ministry, since it said it would stop US citizens entering the country in retaliation to Washington's visa ban against Tehran and six other majority-Muslim countries.
The 2017 Wrestling World Cup - Men's freestyle - will be the last of a set of three Wrestling World Cups in 2017 which will be held in Kermanshah, Iran, from February 16-17.
United World Wrestling issued a statement underlining that it is committed to provide chance for competition in first-class tournaments around the world for best wrestlers. Although we have no insight into the political differences between the United States and Iran, cooperation between wrestling federations of the two countries is highly regarded.
The statement pointed out that "Federations of both countries expressed their desire to the presence of American freestyle wrestlers at the World Cup; it is a source of pride knowing that wrestling can make such international cooperation between the two countries and hope that Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs agrees to the presence of American wrestlers at the World Cup.”
